Smoke Empties Arizona High-Rise

PHOENIX -- A small electrical fire forced the evacuation of a Phoenix high-rise building that houses the Arizona Department of Revenue on Monday morning. Phoenix fire officials said about 600 people were in the building at 1600 W. Monroe Street to start the work week when a smoke alarm sounded about 8:22 a.m. The building was evacuated, and firefighters discovered heavy smoke in the basement level, where they found an electrical panel that had shorted out and triggered a sprinkler activation.

The building was evacuated, and firefighters discovered heavy smoke in the basement level, where they found an electrical panel that had shorted out and triggered a sprinkler activation.

One person who was having difficulty breathing was transported to a nearby hospital, fire officials said.
