Spokane firefighters rescued a woman last night from a blaze last night at the Maplewood Gardens Nursing Home, according to a department press release.

The fire at 1100 North Superior Street was reported at 10:38 a.m. with reports of smoke reported on the fourth floor of the structure.

Crews made a rapid entry into the building and remaining residents were evacuated as containment of the fire began.

Firefighters from Ladder 1 found a woman on the floor of the apartment that was burning and were able to quickly remove her from the unit.

The victim was transported to a local hospital to be evaluated as was released later that night.

There were seven other residents who were suffering from systems ranging from smoke inhalation and cold exposure due to the temperature outside. Two of those residents were transported to hospitals.

The sprinkler system inside the burning apartment had activated, and helped keep the fire manageable for arriving crews who had it extinguished in 15 minutes.

The fire currently is under investigation by the Special Investigation Unit and the cause remains undetermined at this time.
