SHAWNEE, Okla. --

A 911 phone call was made to Shawnee police early Saturday morning. The mother told dispatchers where to find her babies.

Officers found the baby boy and girl in the back of a pickup truck with a note that said: "Take care of my babies. I'm poor and can't do it."

Shawnee Fire Chief Jimmy Gibson said he was shocked when he heard the news but not surprised.

"I think people recognize the fire station is a safe place -- a place of security and that they are going to try and make things right, and I think our members did that," Gibson said.

Oklahoma's safe haven law allows mothers to surrender unwanted children less than 7-days old to first responders while remaining anonymous.

Police aren't sure if the mother committed a crime.

"For her to make contact with personnel on the safe side itself. The state is trying to get as much information as they can, not only from the child's perspective, also for the mother," says Cpl. Dan Shumaker, of the Shawnee Police Department.

The district attorney doesn't believe the mother did anything wrong but wants to review the case to make sure she didn't break any laws.

Police said the babies are in good condition.
