A Canadian firefighter died Sunday of injuries sustained during an ice rescue training drill.

Gary Kendall, 51, was a member of Point Edward Volunteer Fire Dept.
Kendall became trapped under the ice, and had to be rescued by fellow fire and rescue personnel, according to The Observer.
He was transported to Bluewater Health where he died early Sunday, reports indicated.
 Fire Chief Doug Mackenzie told the newspaper: “"There are no words to express the feelings of this community in this tragic loss. The Point Edward Fire & Rescue uphold the highest traditions of the Fire Service. We are all extremely proud of Gary Kendall and everything he stood for. The entire community holds the same sentiment."
