Massive Fire Destroys Detroit Buildings

DETROIT -- A fire broke out at a commercial building on Detroits West Side sending explosions and huge flames into the sky Friday evening, authorities said. Fire officials said a building spanning a city block on Schaefer Highway near Plymouth Road went up in flames causing a level three hazardous materials situation. Officials were concerned becaue chemicals, gas tanks, and other hazardous materials were kept on the property.

A fire broke out at a commercial building on Detroits West Side sending explosions and huge flames into the sky Friday evening, authorities said.

Fire officials said a building spanning a city block on Schaefer Highway near Plymouth Road went up in flames causing a level three hazardous materials situation. Officials were concerned becaue chemicals, gas tanks, and other hazardous materials were kept on the property.

The fire started at Saad Auto Parts and spread to several buildings. It burned for more than eight hours.

A firefighter was injured when a piece of metal fell on his leg. There's no word on the extent of his injury.

No evacuation orders were made.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
