OMAHA, Neb. --

Firefighters rescued a 6-year-old boy from a burning house in Omaha after thick smoke blocked attempts by the boy's father.

Crews were called to the house fire near 29th Street and Laurel Avenue around 2:30 a.m.

Acting Assistant Fire Chief Joe Mancuso said firefighters arrived to find a father already outside the house with one injured child. The father told the firefighters there was a second child upstairs.

Mancuso said the first team sent into the house passed a small fire on the way to the attic where they found the second child. While they were upstairs, the fire grew and blocked their path back downstairs.

A ladder crew was deployed to the attic and provided the escape route, Mancuso said.

The children, both boys, ages 2 and 6, were taken to the hospital in serious condition. The father, Marlon Station, said his youngest son suffered burns and both boys suffered smoke inhalation.

The father said he made three trips into the house to get the boys. He got his youngest son on the second trip but was thwarted by the smoke during his third time in, he said.

Firefighters told Station the cause of the fire could be electrical.
