SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla. --

Two people were injured after a portion of floor collapsed at a Sunny Isles Beach hotel Sunday afternoon.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said a 15-foot-by-15-foot portion of the lower lobby at the Marco Polo Beach Resort on 192 Street and Collins Avenue caved in around 5 p.m. Two women walking in the lobby at the time reportedly fell 7 feet and were trapped by debris.

It took a team of 40 firefighters over an hour to rescue the victims. They were taken to local hospitals with minor injures.

The cause of the collapse was still under investigation. The 10-story, 600-room hotel and condo was built in 1968 and is owned by Ramada. Hotel management said the building passed its 40-year inspection in 2008 and there was no indication of structural damage leading up to the collapse.
