Three Gadsden firefighters were injured when a floor collapsed into the basement of a burning home last night (Nov. 16), according to The Gadsden Times.

Two of the firefighters suffered minor injuries and the condition of the third had been undetermined when ambulances transported them to a local hospital, Assistant Fire Chief Randy Smith told the newspaper.

Smith said none of the injuries to the firefighters were life-threatening.

Four engines and 12 firefighters responded to the initial call for the blaze on Scenic Drive, just off Noccalula Road, at approximately 5 p.m. By the time crews arrived, one end of the house was engulfed in flames as the fire continued to grow.

Within a matter of minutes after the firefighters entered the structure the floor gave way. The injured firefighters were transported and by 6:15 p.m., crews had the fire contained.

Smith said that crews may have gone in too far and that they switched to an exterior attack after the collapse.

The fire started when the home's owner was working in the basement garage when a work light sparked some gasoline, igniting the blaze.
