Calif. Building Catches Fire After Crash

APTOS, Calif. --

A driver being chased by California Highway Patrol officers crashed into a building near Aptos, setting it completely on fire, authorities said.

Police said CHP officers were chasing the man at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when he crashed into the building, which is across the street from the 5000 block of Freedom Boulevard.

It is currently unclear why CHP was chasing the man.

The building became entirely engulfed in flames and smoke was seen from as far as the Monterey Peninsula.

Firefighters were able to put the fire out as of 6:30 p.m., but not before the building sustained severe damage.
