HOUSTON --

The holiday season has taken a sad turn for several families in southwest Houston after a fire ripped through their condominium complex.

Around 8 a.m. Saturday, firefighters were called to the Reflections on the Lake condominiums in the 2000 block of Gentryside Drive.

Eight units at the complex were destroyed.

One resident who lived on the top floor said he had to hang out of the window to escape being burned.

"I'm glad to be alive," said the resident. "I had to do something."

Residents had to sift through the debris and save what they could including the family of one resident who was set to move out the following week.

Contractors say the damage is extensive.

"They all have to be gutted out, all the carpets, the tile. Firefighters cut through some of the units," said David Hekimian with Accumen contracting.

Residents were able to get most of their pets out, however one cat did not make it out in time.

Firefighters said no people were injured during the fire.
