Ohio City Lays Off Firefighters

CANTON, Ohio -- City officials said 26 police officers and 28 fire personnel would get layoff notices Monday. This is part of the city's ongoing effort to reduce spending in anticipation of a projected $4.5 million budget shortfall in 2010. Although 26 officers will get notices, only 18 are in danger of losing their jobs because of stimulus funds. City officials asked union representatives to open contract negotiations so that there wouldn't have to be any layoffs.
