OREGON CITY, Ore. --

A Jeep crashing into an Oregon City apartment complex gave residents an unexpected wake up call early Tuesday morning.

At 3:26 a.m., the driver of the Jeep drove into the stairwell of one of the apartment buildings at Mountain View apartments on Molalla Avenue, said Steve McAdoo in a Clackamas Fire District #1 news release.

People living on the upper floor of the apartments had to be helped down from their balcony by firefighters because of the destruction caused by the crash.

Firefighters worked for several hours to shore up the front of the building and make it safe until a construction team can arrive to begin rebuilding the concrete and steel stairwell.

The Red Cross helped four people who were living in the affected apartments. They will be unable to live in the apartments until power is restored and construction is complete.

There appeared to be no damage to the building itself and no injuries were reported.

The driver of the Jeep was taken into custody by Oregon City police.
