Lightning Sparks House Fire in Florida

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. --

Eyewitnesses say lightning struck a home on Gemgold Court in Windermere's Summerport Village subdivision just after 7:00pm Monday night.

In a matter of minutes, firefighters swarmed the streets of the Windermere community. By that time, the flames were in the attic and tearing through the home.

We tried an interior attack. We had a couple of lines with two crews inside. We pulled some ceiling. We were able to get some water on the fire but by that time it had grown too large for us, said Battalion Chief Martin Cyphers, Orange County Fire Rescue.

Firefighters were eventually forced to pull out and take a defensive stance, fighting the blaze from outside the home.

Four people were inside the home at the time of the strike, including two children. They were all able to make it out but the fire tore through the attic and destroyed the home.

We were just worried about anyone in the house, making sure everybody was safe," said Christie Simpson, neighbor.

Neighbors helped the family pull valuables from inside as the fire burned the home.

Firefighters tell Eyewitness News that the home is a total loss.
