WASHINGTON --

A four-alarm fire raged though a building in northwest Washington late Friday.

It began around 10:30 p.m. in the 5400 block of First Place in Northwest.

When firefighters arrived at the four-story building, flames could be seen coming from the roof.

The building was vacant and undergoing renovations. One firefighter was taken to the hospital with chest pains, but no other injuries were reported.

The building could be a total loss and its roof is destroyed, investigators said. The fire's cause is under investigation.
