PALM BAY, Fla. --

A brush fire that was threatening homes in Brevard County has been brought under control, and authorities are calling the blaze suspicious.

About a dozen homes, mainly along Brantley Street and on Algaringo Avenue in Palm Bay, were threatened by the fire.

The homes were evacuated, but several residents tried to get back to their homes while firefighters fought the flames, including one resident who was trying to get her dogs, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported. They were held back by firefighters.

Palm Bay police said the fire appears to be suspicious because they do not think weather played a factor in starting the blaze.

A trailer and a boat were destroyed in the fire, officials said.

The fast-moving blaze, estimated at 10 to 15 acres, was first reported at about 1:20 p.m., Palm Bay fire officials said.

Palm Bay Fire Rescue and the Florida Division of Forestry battled the blaze.
