INDEPENDENCE, Ky. --

Independence police said officers heard gunfire before three bodies were found inside a burned home on Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called out to the 1800 block of Freedom Trail at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday after receiving two 911 calls, one for a fire, the other a report of gunfire.

When officers and firefighters arrived, they were fired upon by someone on the second floor of the home. Officers went into the home after the firing stopped.

The fire was put out quickly and the house did not seem to suffer much external damage, but firefighters found three bodies inside.

Most of the damage was done to a second-floor bedroom.

Three adults, Juscia Padilla, 22, Seaward Padilla, 43 and Lori Padilla, 44, were found in the home. All three had been shot. An unharmed 2-year-old girl was found outside the home and is now with relatives.

Police said the home belonged to the elder Padillas. Jusica Padilla is their daughter.
