OCEANSIDE, Calif. --

One man suffered severe burns Tuesday afternoon following an explosion in Oceanside, NBC 7/39 reports.

The incident took place around 4:18 p.m. at a parking lot at Martin Luther King Park in the 4300 block of Mesa Drive.

Oceanside police and firefighters with the Rancho Fire Department said a 35-year-old man was filling up a chainsaw with gasoline when the explosion happened.

"From what I understand he received burns on 50 percent of his lower body and legs," said Oceanside police spokesman Kelan Poorman.

The man was conscious and breathing, Poorman said. The crews were working on a new skate park, he said.

Copter 2 and ground units were responding to treat the man and transport him to the UCSD Burn Center.
