INDIANAPOLIS --

One of nine firefighters killed while battling a blaze in South Carolina last week was an Indiana native.

Mark Kelsey, 40, made his final trip home to Washington, Ind., on Sunday, 6News' Cheryl Jackson reported.

Kelsey's body arrived at Indianapolis International Airport at about 4:30 p.m. before the journey to southwestern Indiana.

Firefighters from more than 10 Indiana departments stood at attention as Kelsey's body and his family rode by.

The hearse that carried Kelsey stopped for a few minutes under a waving U.S. flag.

"We were actually on the bus with part of the family going out to get the casket," said Carmel fire Lt. Gary Brandt. "I got to talk to a couple of the family members and how grateful they are for what's actually taken place. This is just an event they'll never forget. It's a great honor. It's the least we can do."

Kelsey's funeral is set for Tuesday.
