McCLURE -- Firefighters from around the region remembered Dennis Hayes as being a guy with a big heart, one who loved to laugh, and someone whose presence will be missed not only by his fellow firefighters, but by everyone in this Snyder County town.

Mr. Hayes, 59, a McClure firefighter, died shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday as he operated McClure's pumper truck at the scene of a devastating house fire in nearby Decatur Township, Mifflin County.

Mr. Hayes was laid to rest Wednesday as hundreds of firefighters attended his funeral at Trinity Lutheran Church, McClure. Following the funeral, his casket was place on a fire truck and taken to the McClure Union Cemetery.

Mr. Hayes was a professional truck driver.

The firefighters erected a memorial in his honor at the fire station.
