A North Branford house went up in flames Wednesday for the second time in a year and a half, NBC 30 reported.

Firefighters said when they arrived at the burning house on Dayton Hill Road at about 7 p.m., the blaze was so big there was not much they could do to save it.

Flames were seen shooting out of the home, and part of it collapsed.

Firefighters said the owner was in the process of rebuilding after a previous fire.

"We did our best to do a defensive effort, so none of our firefighters were in danger, but the building is a total loss," said North Branford Fire Department Chief Anthony Esposito.

The homeowner was not home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported, fire officials said.

There was no word on how it started.
