Mexican officials closed northbound lanes of the border crossing at Otay Mesa Sunday for several hours because of thick smoke from a large wildfire burning south of the border.

The fire is burning in heavy brush west of Tecate, Mexico. As of Monday, it had blackened about 10,000 acres, but it was not threatening any communities, NBC 7/39 reported. A large plume of smoke from the fire was visible from many parts of San Diego.

Officials reopened the Otay Mesa border crossing Sunday afternoon.
