Lightning Strikes Spark Fires near Denver

The storm kept firefighters busy.

Lightning sparked at least two small fires in Evergreen Monday afternoon.

One fire burned at the Buchanan Recreation Center on the north side of Evergreen, at 32002 Ellingwood Trail. Evergreen fire spokesman Einer Jensen said that lightning struck the roof at about 2:30 p.m.

The fire department was only a block away so firefighters responded quickly and brought it under control in less than 30 minutes. The building was evacuated but no one was hurt.

The damage was contained to the roof area. The building will be closed for several days. Indian Hills and Genesee fire crews helped Evergreen fire at the scene.

Lightning also sparked a small brush fire on Highway 73 and Brook Forest Road, on the south side of Evergreen. Even though it's small, only about a quarter of an acre, Elk Creek Fire crews were called in to help put it out. It was also quickly brought under control.

The storm that may have started both fires came through around 2:30 p.m. with lots of lightning and very little moisture, firefighters said.
