Florida Firefighters Extinguish Brush Fire

May 5, 2006
Officials said the blaze was caused by a welder's blaze.

Firefighters in Volusia County were busy Thursday battling flare-ups of a brush fire along Interstate 4.

The fire is burning near Saxon Boulevard and I-4, and it slowed rush-hour traffic Wednesday evening, WESH 2 News reported.

The fire could cause more headaches Thursday morning. A welder's torch sparked the blaze around 2:45 p.m., and Deltona firefighters monitored the blaze overnight.

At its height, the fire threatened to burn one home, but firefighters were able to keep the flames away.

Because of heavy smoke, all but one lane of eastbound I-4 was closed during Wednesday's rush hour, but a wind shift early Thursday is keeping the smoke away from the busy highway.
