A two-alarm apartment fire shut down part of Memorial Drive near downtown Houston Monday afternoon, officials told KPRC Local 2.

The blaze broke out at the Bayou Park Village apartment complex, in the 4400 block of Memorial Drive at Jackson Hill shortly before noon.

A second alarm was called for additional manpower because the nearest hydrant was three blocks away, officials said. The street was closed for a short time so fire trucks and equipment could reach the blaze.

Investigators said the fire began when a resident accidentally knocked over a candle, setting curtains on fire. He was treated at a local hospital for smoke inhalation.
