Fire crews battled a fire that destroyed a home where neighbors say "Lost" star Evangeline Lilly lives in Kailua Wednesday morning.

The blaze started before 7 a.m. on Iana Street.

By the time crews got there the house was engulfed in flames, a Honolulu Fire Department captain said.

"We watched the house go up in flames. You could see the electrical box on the side of the home popping making very, very, loud, loud noises," neighbor Morgan Janus said.

Lilly's publicist said that the star was not in the house at the time of the fire.

Lilly, who plays "Kate" on the hit ABC show, rents the house with two other women. No one was home when the fire broke out.

However, Lilly's boyfriend, Dominic Monaghan, who plays "Charlie" on the show, appeared at the home to survey the damage. Neighbors greeted him with hugs and filled him in on what happened.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the blaze, which gutted the home and left everything inside charred.

"It was amazing. The amount of damage was just phenomenal," neighbor Thomas Cummings said.

Lilly has lived at the home since 2004 when "Lost" first started shooting in Hawaii, according to neighbors.

During "Lost's" red carpet event in October on Waikiki Beach, Lilly -- who is from Canada -- told KITV she now considers the islands home and that the local culture has grown on her.

"When I first came here, 'Rice for breakfast?' I thought it was the most preposterous thing in the world, but now it's one of my favorites: eggs and rice for breakfast," Lilly said during that interview.

Her neighbors said they hope she will make it through the loss during the holidays.

"It's very sad. I'm afraid we are going to lose her as a neighbor," Janus said.
