Investigators said that candles left burning caused a fire on the city's north side on Christmas morning that left four people homeless.

The fire occurred shortly after 5 a.m. in the 200 block of East Northwood Avenue.

Firefighters said the candles were left burning in the first floor. Three people escaped the fire safely, but a woman was trapped on the second floor.

"She was trapped on the back roof," said Columbus police Sgt. Steve Livingston said. "The officers were able to convince her to jump off the roof and into their arms. And the officers were able to catch her."

The woman, who was identified as Wendy Winger, was treated for smoke inhalation. Another victim received medical attention for burns on his hands.

Officials said everyone was released from the hospital and were expected to recover.
