A fire at a southwest Houston house killed a woman inside before spreading to a neighboring home Friday morning, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Firefighters were called to the 5900 block of Rutherglenn at Dunlap shortly after 6 a.m. and found flames and smoke billowing from a home.

Burglar bars prevented rescuers from entering the house quickly. After they gained entry, firefighters found a woman's body inside.

A neighboring home caught fire when flames spread, officials said. No one was injured in that fire.

Both houses sustained heavy damage.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, but it may be weather-related.

Officials believe a runner in the area spotted the initial fire and called 911.
