California Chief Found Dead at Home

He was preparing to respond to an EMS call when he collapsed.

A volunteer fire chief from California collapsed at his home last week while preparing for an EMS response.

Orcutt Fire Protection District Chief Ronny A. Bennett, 39, was found in his residence the day after he died, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Information showed Bennett suffered the fatal attack while preparing to respond to a medical call at 10:41 p.m. on Nov. 13.

Members of his department found him the following evening.

This brings to 105 the number of firefighters who have died on duty this year, compared to 106 in 2006.

Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Monday, November 19, 2007 at Magner-Maloney Funeral Home. A traditional service with full honors will be held at Pacific Christian Church on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 beginning with honors at 9:30 a.m. and service at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the Santa Maria Cemetery.
