Two Paris Firefighters Killed in Collapse

Two Paris firefighters were killed following the collapse of a multi-story garage during blaze.

The body of Caporal-Chef Matthieu Mercier, 23, was found under the debris of a wall, according to published reports.

Another firefighter, Aaporal Ludovic Martin, 21, was freed from the debris and rushed to a hospital where he later died.

The two were battling a garage fire when a car is believed to have exploded, causing the collapse, according to the French press accounts.

Upon receiving news of the firefighters' deaths, the French prime minister said: "This tragic death reminds us all that firefighters are often at greatest risk for the performance of their duty anywhere in the territory ... They deserve the respect and admiration of everyone. We must their being profondement grateful."
