Milwaukee Fire Truck, School Bus Collide
A fire truck backing into the firehouse near 81st Street and Bradley Road was hit by a school bus heading east on Bradley Road.
The bus hit the back of the fire truck, according to the fire department, at about 8:15 a.m. Wednesday.
According to Children's Hospital, 16 children were sent there with minor injuries. The bus driver and the truck operator were also transported to area hospitals with minor injuries, 12 News reporter Patrick Paolantonio said.
The bus was heading to Elijah's Brook God's Nation Children's School on Bradley Road on 76th Street in Milwaukee. It is a faith-based school for students from kindergarten through the 12th grade, and it has an enrollment of about 75 to a 100 students.
Staff at the school assumed the driver, Carlos Meyes, held a driver's license, but his regular license had expired. Police told 12 News he wasn't just driving the bus today, he was also training another person to drive it when they hit the fire truck. Teacher Darwyn Diller says administrators at the school play many roles.
Milwaukee police told 12 News the 39-year-old bus driver, identified as Carlos Meyes of Milwaukee, received four citations: driving without a license, driving without a school bus endorsement, inattentive driving and driving too fast for conditions.
Police said Meyes told them that the brakes on the bus weren't working properly. Initial tests showed they were working fine, but police will do further testing. Meyes could also face a ticket for driving with faulty brakes.
The Milwaukee Fire Department told 12 News that the firehouse ranks among the top in the city when it comes to the number of tickets the department writes for people who don't yield the right of way for the fire department.
