Firefighters said burglars broke into the office to steal drugs.

Firefighters said burglars who broke in to a Scripps Ranch dentist's office Sunday to steal drugs started a fire that destroyed it.

Firefighters got the first call from a passer-by at about 5:20 a.m.

The interior of the dentist's office and a dermatology center were gutted. Hundreds of medical records were destroyed.

The fire was extinguished in about 40 minutes, but not before it spread to the roof.

Seven other businesses were affected, six suffering serious smoke damage.

The fire caused $2 million in damage to the building's structure and contents.

There was no suspect description as of early Sunday.
