Houston Mother Throws Children To Safety From Fire

A mother threw her two children out of her apartment to save them from a fierce fire, KPRC Local 2 reported. The Houston Fire Department responded to the two-alarm blaze at the Chelsea Lane Apartments in the 8000 block of Boone Road near Bissonnet Street at about 6:30 p.m. Friday. One mother tossed her 2-month-old and 2-year-old children out of their burning apartment, officials said. They encountered a mother on the second floor who was dropping the children down to the firefighters, Assistant Chief Omero Longoria said. The mother then jumped from the inferno. All three were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The mother suffered scrapes and scratches but her children suffered severe burns. Officials said the building had a new roof had was built on top an older roof. The fire traveled between the roofs, forcing firefighters to basically let the fire burn itself out. . About 90 firefighters helped control the fire and tend to injured residents. Crews extinguished the fire at about 8:15 p.m. Firefighters said 10 units were damaged or destroyed. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
