Controlled Burn Goes Out Of Control In Florida

Aug. 10, 2006
The fire's location made it hard to get close to

A fire burning Wednesday evening near the Beachline in Brevard County originally started as a controlled burn.

The fire was inching closer and closer to the Beachline on Wednesday afternoon. There was not much firefighters could do. They can't reach it from the road, so they were watching it to make sure it didnt spot over.

The Beachline remained open Wednesday afternoon.

Because of the fire's location just south of the Beachline and about a mile and a half west of Interstate 95, it's hard to get close to. Firefighters sent in some brush trucks, but they have to be careful because the road is rough and very sandy. It is easy to get stuck in.

The fire began as a controlled burn a few days ago and took off Wednesday afternoon with the winds.

There is a canal that separates the fire from the Beachline and firefighters were hoping that would stop it, but they were also keeping an eye out to see if the fire was able to jump it.
