Investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire early Tuesday morning that killed a man.

The victim, identified as Dave Kirch, 57, lived at the home in the 7000 block of Eastwick Lane, near 71st Street and Shadeland Avenue, in Lawrence Township, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.

Firefighters were called to the home at about 1:30 a.m. after a neighbor heard a woman calling for her husband. Gwin Kirch said that her husband initially came out, but went back inside the home to call for help, according to officials.

"Mr. Kirch woke her up, told her the house was on fire. Apparently, they came out and he decided to go back in to get a cell phone to call 911," said Indianapolis Metro police Lt. Doug Scheffel. "He never emerged from the house any longer."

The man's body was found upstairs in the home. Neighbors said the couple has lived at the home for more than 20 years. Investigators were not immediately sure what might have sparked the blaze.

A Lawrence Township firefighter was injured as he battled the blaze, suffering some burns. He was taken to Community North Hospital, where he was expected to recover.
