An early-morning apartment fire in Sacramento County killed a father and his two young children Saturday.

Oraysheon Johnson, a 7-month-old boy, and Kayla Johnson, an 18-month-old girl, died in the blaze. Their mother was not injured.

The fire started just after 6 a.m. at the Bentley Place apartments on Morse Avenue, fire officials said.

The mother told firefighters that she woke up and found a small fire inside the apartment. After alerting the children's father, she tried unsuccessfully to get a fire extinguisher. The couple was not married.

Investigators don't yet know what caused the blaze, which displaced a total of six people. Firefighters said several apartments in the building did not have working smoke detectors. The building's owner was ordered to have working detectors in all units within 24 hours.

"This was a preventable tragedy," said Sacramento Metro Fire Department spokesman Christian Pebbles.

The property damage is estimated at $400,000.
