SALZBURG, Austria (AP) -- A large fire swept through stables at a farm in western Austria early Monday, burning to death 20 cows, Austrian television reported.

The fire broke out at around 1 a.m. (0000GMT) at the farm in the village of Maria Alm in the province of Salzburg. Only two of the 22 cows housed in the stables could be rescued, officials said.

Firefighters were hampered by bitterly cold temperatures of around minus-16 degrees Celcius (4 degrees Farenheit), and the buildings were completely engulfed in flame by the time they arrived, authorities said.

No firefighters or residents were injured. Investigators were still working Monday to determine the cause of the blaze.
