A funeral was held Thursday to honor a firefighter and paramedic from Johnson County who died too soon.

36-year-old Randy McCarty died Monday in his sleep.

Fire department officials say it was a massive heart attack.

The funeral was held at the Paintsville Fire Station and more than 300 people came to say their goodbyes.

Friends and co-workers say McCarty loved his job and his community.

"You're always close when you're in the fire department business and paramedic business, you're just one big family; it's just like losing your brother," Jim Williams said.

Randy McCarty had been with the Paintsville Fire Department for around twelve years and was one of the first paramedics in Johnson County.

The Paintsville Fire Department remained completely closed until six o'clock.

During that time, the Prestonsburg Fire Department covered the area.
