CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- A man died after a fire swept through a house early Friday, officials said.

Firefighters were called to the home on the city's southwest side shortly before 1 a.m. on a report of a fire in a bedroom. When they arrived minutes later, flames and smoke were coming from two sides of the home.

Firefighters pulled the man from the house, but he died at the hospital, officials said.

A woman, who was also at the house, tried to save her friend, but couldn't get him out of the house. She then ran next door and called 911.

She was treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries and taken to the hospital for observation.

No names were immediately released. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
