Infant Abandoned at Florida Fire Station

The hou-old baby was left on a doorstep loosely wrapped in an adult shirt.
An hour-old infant was abandoned late Wednesday at a Miami-Dade fire station at 15890 SW 288 St.

Spokeswoman Shari Holbert Lipner said the baby was left on a doorstep loosely wrapped in an adult shirt. Station Capt. Laura Kupinski discovered the baby after she went to investigate strange sounds outside the front door.

Authorities weren't searching for the infant's parents. Under state law, if a newborn is left at a fire or police stations, parents relinquish all rights to newborns they abandon and havee amnesty.

''It happens more often than you think,'' said Lipner. ''It is a better alternative than finding a baby in a garbage can or a bush.''

The baby, in apparent good health, was transfered to a local hospital and is now in custody of the Department of Children and Families.
