LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- A woman and two of her children died early Wednesday in an apartment fire that apparently started in the kitchen, authorities said.
Police Capt. James Geier said seven people were originally in the house, but three had left for school, and the father escaped the fire, which broke out shortly after 8:30 a.m.
Killed were the 26-year-old mother, her 4-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter. Their names were not released.
The blaze appeared to have started in a kitchen wall near the oven, and fire investigators were considering faulty wiring as a possible cause, Geier said.
Fire officials said the family's apartment had smoke alarms but no batteries.
The apartment was destroyed, and the four-plex had significant damage. Four people from another unit in the complex escaped, and the other two apartments were unoccupied.
