In Jackson County, fire has destroyed a well-known electronics factory, closed a road for most of the day, and forced people living nearby out of their homes.

Officials say no one was hurt in Saturday night at Mid South Electronic in Annville. State highway officials shut down nearby Kentucky 30 and evacuated residents within a one-mile radius of the plant, which produces refrigerator equipment. The road reopened late Sunday afternoon.

Jackson County Emergency Management coordinator Billy Gay says firefighters were still putting out the blaze Sunday afternoon. Gay says residents were cleared out of the area because of the risk of possible chemical releases from the fire. Only a few employees were at the plant when the fire started. The plant employs about 900.

Transportation officials says Kentucky 30 reopened at about 5:30 p.m Sunday.
