ENDERLIN, N.D. (AP) -- An apartment building fire here early Friday has killed one person, the city's fire chief said.

The name of the victim has not been released.

Firefighters were called the Lindemann Building at about 3:30 a.m., fire chief Duane Skramstad said. The building contains apartments, a restaurant and liquor store, he said.

Several people escaped from their apartments without injury, Skramstad said. The fire damage was contained to a basement apartment, he said.

Firefighters from Enderlin, Lisbon, Casselton and Leonard fought the blaze in subzero conditions.

Skramstad said the state fire marshal's office is investigating the blaze.
