GUELPH, Ont. (CP) -- An elderly man escaped his burning apartment Tuesday without even the clothes on his back.

The man was nude on the balcony of his second-storey apartment when crews arrived just before 11:30 a.m., fire officials said.

The man told firefighters he was in his bathroom and came out to find his residence filled with smoke, so he immediately went to the balcony, Capt. Darryl Paterson said.

Firefighters used ladders to rescue the man and an elderly woman from the balcony of an adjacent apartment.

The remaining residents of the six-storey building were safely evacuated.

The resident of the damaged unit was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, Paterson said.
