MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A fire ripped through part of a 10-unit apartment building early Sunday, killing a man and woman who friends said had only moved into their apartment about two weeks ago.

Firefighters were called to the blaze around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, said fire dispatch supervisor Robert White said. The building was engulfed in flames.

The names of the victims weren't released by authorities, but friends said both were 26 years old, and the woman's birthday was Sunday. Their son and daughter were staying with the woman's mother and were not in the apartment at the time of the fire, friends said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

Witness Loren Edwards said he heard a boom that shook the building.

Acting Deputy Fire Chief Randall Zingler said the apartment in which the couple died did not have working fire detectors.
