GREEN ISLAND, N.Y. (AP) -- An Albany police officer accused of drunken driving sparked a fire at an apartment complex here after he crashed his Corvette into a garage, police said.

Gregory Krikorian, a four-year veteran of the Albany Police Department, was charged early Thursday with driving while intoxicated, state police said.

Troopers said they received a call from a witness who saw Krikorian's Corvette strike a guard rail on the northbound side of Interstate 787 near Watervliet. When police arrived at the officer's Green Island apartment five miles north of Albany, they discovered flames.

Police said they were told by witnesses that Krikorian had difficulty getting his car into the garage, and once he finally did, a blaze broke out.

The fire caused extensive damage to the garage and the apartment overhead, authorities said.

Krikorian, 25, was issued an appearance ticket. No injuries were reported.
