NEW GLASGOW, N.S. (CP) -- A volunteer firefighter was one of two men arrested in connection with a string of deliberately set fires in the Stellarton, N.S. area.

Stellarton police chief Amby Heighton said a 19-year-old man and a 22-year-old were arrested Monday following a fire in the town.

``We received information from some residents, which led to the arrests,'' said Heighton.

The 22-year-old was identified as a volunteer fireman with the Plymouth department.

Plymouth fire chief Mike Conway would not comment on the matter, other than to say that the firefighter has resigned from the department.

Charges of mischief against both men were expected to be laid.

Heighton said a wave of grass or brush fires in the Stellarton area started in June. He added that none of them resulted in any structural blazes.

Heighton said a motive for the crimes had not been clearly established.
