A four-alarm fire at a Foster City single-family residence has left a woman person dead, according to Foster City Fire Department Battalion Chief Nick Weber.

The fast-moving fire was first reported around 9:30 p.m., at 1017 Gull Ave., Weber reports, and was upgraded to four alarms when it threatened to spread to the residences next door and behind.

According to Weber, approximately 50 firefighters from throughout San Mateo County reported to the scene, and prevented the blaze from spreading. The fire was under control just before 11 p.m.

The fatality was found in the residence where the fire originated, and no additional injuries have been reported, Weber said. Neighbors believe she was out of the house but returned to retrieve her cat when she was overcome by the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
