SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- A fire killed two men and injured two other people early Tuesday in a blaze that destroyed three wooden homes on Puerto Rico's western coast, police said.

Jesus Cruz died from burns he sustained in the fire in Mayaguez while burns and smoke inhalation caused the death of 83-year-old Angel Torres Perez, police spokeswoman Widna Bonilla said.

The fire started late Monday and went into early Tuesday, Bonilla said.

A possible cause of the fire was a candle in Torres' home, but investigators were also looking at whether a short-circuit of wiring from one home to another sparked the blaze, officials said.

Roberto Sanchez suffered second-degree and third-degree burns on half his body, police said. He was reported to be in stable condition at a hospital in the capital, San Juan.

Carmen Otero Lugo was hospitalized with smoke inhalation in Mayaguez, police said.
