One woman is dead. She was the victim of a morning apartment fire in Bath Beach.

Officials believe the woman died of smoke inhalation but that is being investigated at this time. She was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital.

The woman was apparently trapped inside of her apartment on the first floor with security bars on the windows. This happened at three-story family home located on Bay 28th Street.

There were five other people including a thirteen year old on the top apartment and all of those people are safe. The fire started around 3:30 a.m. this morning and took more than 60 firefighters to contain it. Officials believe the fire started in the first floor apartment of the woman who later died.

Chief Marty Ford, FDNY: "We did discover her in the rear bedroom. It is undetermined whether she tried to get out, but we did have a lot of difficulties in gaining access to get in there because the fire met us right at the front door. The units had to wait for the fire to be knocked down before they could get in."

Five firefighters suffered minor injuries and the cause of the fire is unknown. People at the scene said the woman's husband was on his way home from work. It is unclear if he knows what happened here.
