Sept. 13, 2001, 2 p.m. -- International and New York City union leaders announced today that FDNY does not need any assistance in its ongoing rescue efforts. General President Schaitberger and General Secretary-Treasure Bollon joined Local 94 President/IAFF 1st District Vice President Kevin Gallagher and Local 854 President Pete Gorman at a noon press conference today at Ground Zero, the former site of the World Trade Center. "At this time, we do not need any assistance from outside New York," Gallagher said. "What we need right now is all your prayers." Due to limited space for search and rescue operations, there are enough fire fighters from both locals to handle ongoing efforts. Nonetheless, Gallagher and Gorman deeply appreciate the enormous outpouring of support from across the International. "My brothers and I thank all IAFF members from the bottom of our hearts," Gallagher continued. "You were there for us in our worst moments and we will always be there for you." Gallagher concluded by saying that if there is a need for assistance, the locals will make their request through the International, or the department will ask other departments directly."
